NTI Backup Now EZ Review

NTI Backup Now EZ is the simpler cousin of NTI Backup Now 5 Advanced.  It’s also less expensive, at only $30 ($20 with current promotion).  It’s lacking a few advanced features, but it had no trouble backing up and restoring my entire computer.

  • Ridiculously easy
  • Price ($30)
  • File, folder, and full system backups

  • Lacking advanced settings

The Bottom Line

NTI Backup Now EZ is a simple, inexpensive, full-system backup solution.

Backing Up

When first started, NTI Backup Now EZ automatically scans your computer and creates backup jobs for you.

The source, destination, and backup schedule are automatically filled in.  These settings can be modified to your liking.

I de-selected the file and folder backup (so I’m only doing full system backups), and changed the schedule to daily.

With that, NTI Backup Now EZ began backing up my entire computer.

If you’re backing up to an external hard drive, the software will make it bootable.  This means you can boot from the same media your backups are stored on.  No need for a separate rescue CD.

The recovery environment runs on Linux and there isn’t much to it.  It restored my computer without any problems.

However, on first boot Windows wanted to run checkdisk to check the disk for errors.  I was told by NTI that due to the complete system backup running within Windows, it creates an image file that is not properly shut down.  I haven’t encountered this with other backup software, but it did not seem to cause any problems.

Complete System Backup

To me, the main selling point of NTI Backup Now EZ is the disk imaging feature.  It can create incremental backups of your entire system on a regular basis.

File and Folder Backup

File and folder backups are also supported.  These backups won’t be as large, or take as long as the system backups.  They’ll also allow you to back up specific folders such as your desktop, family photos, etc.

The software includes a help manual.  The manual is fairly small, since there aren’t a lot of advanced features in NTI Backup Now EZ.

Technical support is available via a web-based email form.  I submitted a support request and was responded to the same day.  NTI writes, “We will make our best efforts to answer your question within 24 business hours of receipt, but please allow us up to 48 hours for a guaranteed response.”

@FabacusSuite Just noticed your tweet! I’m not aware of any cloud storage needs specific to manufacturing. I’m open to insight/suggestions. – 2 years ago

Did a full system restore but only get a flashing curser at reboot,,,,freaking out that I lost all my family’s itunes!!!

    • NTISupport

Call Tech Support (949) 421-0712 or e-mail us at [email protected]. The flashing cursor just means it’s having trouble with the boot partition in your drive. Usually happens if you have a motherboard that supports UEFI. You just need to go into the UEFI bios and make sure your drive is booting with UEFI enabled. But if you need help just give us a call. Your data is still there since the restored finished.

Call Tech Support (949) 421-0712. Usually this problem occurs if you have a registry cleaner or pc tune-up program installed. Those programs deleted the uninstall registry keys. You can use the Microsoft Fix It program to uninstall the Backup Now EZ. If you need your Backup Now EZ installation, please give us a call or e-mail [email protected]

    • NTI backup program needs major improvement, NTI has no file repair utility for an image file that won’t restore or may be possibly corrupt, or a utility similar to Symantec Ghost Explorer, or Acronis’s that allows you to mount and open the image file and extract any files inside it, and reclose / reseal it. A freind lost all his Data thinking he backed up his computer before he had me do a clean install of Windows 10, I could not restore the image file containing all his data.

I have a Toshiba STOR.E Canvio 500GB USB 3.0 portable hard drive and I’m backing up around 30gb of data on the weekly backup of my files. The NTI Backup Now EZ program is so slow… It’s been around 5 hours now doing an incremental weekly backup…… It gets to 90% really quick then seems to stall on the last 10% of the backup. It was 96% an hour ago and now it’s at 97% with my laptop running really hot because this program has been running and nothing else.

OK it’s free with the drive but I need something better than this…
Slow Slow Slow backup software for people who have plenty of time on their hands and have a desk top fan to keep their systems cool… 🙁

    • Sorry to hear it’s running so slow. There’s a ton of backup software out there if you’re looking for an alternative. Let me know if you need any help with this using the “Contact” link at the top of the page.

NTI Backup Now EZ came with the external hard drive I purchased. I’m new to backup software but the speed the file and folder backup seems ridiculously slow, much slower than if I were to simply drag and drop all of the folders I wanted to back up onto the external HD. Can someone please explain to me why I should want to spend hours on end devoting 50% of my CPU usage to this software instead of just drag-and-dropping?

  • sadatoni

I give it specific folders to backup, and it backs up things I did not select!

    • sadatoni

I finally see what it’s doing – backing up various sound files throughout the C: drive..

  • Halowiscious

How come when I do a full system backup, it starts with my e-drive and not my c drive? Why can’t you modify which drives you need to back up?

    • That doesn’t sound right. Did you try contacting NTI support?

      • Halowiscious

No, but I just recently read a faq and it said whatever sata drive is plugged into the lowest numbered port in the mobo is the one that gets the system backup, lol. Too bad the program could not tell the difference between the drive with the operating system on it, and a secondary drive. I’m going to see what happens after I swith the cables. Crossing my fingers.

        • Halowiscious

Didnt make a difference. Went to e drive right away. Don’t really need that drive backed up. Gonna call tech support when I have a spare minute.

Its a piece of JUNK! Every time I get home from work, or get up in the morning, it says I need a system-restore. I’ve lost too much of my work already and not I’m having trouble uninstalling it – what a trap I’ve gotten into!

  • Nice post. Thank you

Tried the full system backup and after that restore. Everything seemed to go well, but after restore, at reboot, I got a ‘A disk read error occurred…’ message.

Software is trash…It’s not even worth the time spent and wasted trying to get a decent backup…The only thing that I was able to backup was “My Files”, but even then all I had to do was drag and drop with a File Explorer…I keep receiving emails and notifications to “Upgrade”, which redirect me to their site to PURCHASE their newer version…How about they patch their existing bugs and then notify me of those updates, without charging…I really hope Toshiba drops them like a bad habit…

Brand new Toshiba external hd came with this software. Either sits at 0% indefinitely (left alone for well over 8 hours multiple times) or just immediately says it “completed with errors.”

Not sure why anyone would waste their time calling tech support with so many other free options out there. Even for free software it’s a joke.

Just received a Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive (early Christmas) and was unsure regarding the software/app (s) that’s preinstalled. So I check things out before committing to changing my computer and I am SO GLAD that I read this piece! NTI & PogoPlug didn’t sit right with me. I need to find a proper backup program but I thought that the computer will do that itself after designating a storage drive? Anyway, thanks for the great review!

I have been doing a full system backup only to realize that if my laptop were to completely fail, I would have nothing as I read in the instructions somewhere that you cannot pick and chose files to restore from a “full system” backup. This software was included with the Canvio drive, but now I am left wondering why I am even doing these full system backups to begin with? If I have to restore, it will probably be to a new machine not my Windows 8.1 (I recently had a bear of a time just getting that upgraded). The guy who took my machine almost had to wipe the entire drive and start over.

So is it true that I could not just go into the music folder on mirror backup and just grab the files and drag them over? It certainly looks like you could. But now I am going to immediately copy my pictures and music separately since that is about the only thing I care about.

If so, it looks like Dodged a massive bullet since there appears to be no way to get these files to a new machine and new operating system.

  • People be warned, this NTI backup program needs major improvement, NTI has no file repair utility for an image file that won’t restore or may be possibly corrupt, or a utility similar to Symantec Ghost Explorer, or Acronis’s that allows you to mount and open the image file and extract any files inside it, and reclose / reseal it. What type of backup program only allows you to create 1 backup and it continually overwrites that backup? My Mom received this program with her Toshiba drive. I will be looking for a new one for her. If she needed to restore something from 2 months ago, she’s out of luck. I thought I could get around it by creating another backup for a different day, but of course, I can’t create more than one. Her backups are only 5 GB also.
