ADrive to Discontinue 50 GB Free Accounts

ADrive announced they will be discontinuing their Basic (free) plans on November 16, 2015. Current users will have until then to migrate their data to another service, or upgrade to a paid account, before it is deleted.

ADrive says this move will allow them to focus more on their premium users, as well as adding new features. Current account holders will be eligible for a 25-58% off discount, when upgrading to a paid plan.

ADrive is an online backup service which famously offered 50 GB of free storage space. In our review, we praised ADrive for offering such a large amount of space, and for their competitive prices (at the time). Benefits included PC and Mac clients, while low points were the dated mobile apps and 2 GB file size limit with free accounts.

This announcement continues a trend in which cloud storage services are moving away from offering free storage, as they can no longer subsidize free accounts with paid subscribers. SpiderOak and SugarSync are two such services, which started out by offering free accounts, and later switched to paid-only models. In 2013 it was revealed that 96% of Dropbox accounts were free users, so this can be a substantial storage cost.

I guess I’ll just move to another storage service.

I’m moving to Google Drive. I cant afford to have another drive site pull this on me again.

        • Good choice. Google Drive will probably offer free storage a lot longer than other services.

I may try Mega, it offers that looks great isn’t it? – Another one providing 50 GB free.

          • Yes, MEGA is the only service offering 50 GB for free now. MEGA is no longer recommended by the founder, Kim Dotcom, and he says the company was seized by the NZ government. However in every conversation I’ve had with MEGA’s support team, they’ve addressed my security concerns. It’s anybody’s guess how long the service will last.

man do they suck. not only are they getting rid of the free service, but the download speeds are severely limited. It will take you days if not weeks to download all your GB of data from their site. it took me over a week to download 25GB at 50kbps-100kbps speeds.

oh, I thought I was the only one getting those lousy speeds!

The worst part is the downloads fail every other time and you have to start again, making the recovery of your data even less likely! Why are they doing this to us?
