Zoolz Offers Lifetime 1 TB Cloud Storage

ClockOnline backup provider Zoolz is offering 1 TB of cloud storage for a one-time payment of $64.99.

I’m not aware of any cloud storage providers that offer lifetime storage, making this offer particularly interesting. SpiderOak (review) has sold lifetime cloud storage in the past, but it’s no longer available.

Zoolz has a couple interesting features, such as:

  • Hybrid backup (local and cloud)
  • Keeps data even when you disconnect your external/network drives

In the past, I criticized Zoolz for checking customer filenames for copyrighted material (a big no-no for a “zero knowledge” cloud provider). It seems they have since learned from their mistake, and removed the clause about metadata scanning from their terms of service.

Lifetime cloud storage sounds like it’s too good to be true. If you do sign up, I wouldn’t put all your digital eggs in one basket. In other words, don’t let Zoolz be the only storage for your files.

Not sure if Zoolz is right for you? Read my review of the service.

@FabacusSuite Just noticed your tweet! I’m not aware of any cloud storage needs specific to manufacturing. I’m open to insight/suggestions. – 2 years ago

  • The Zoolz position on illegal file sharing is a red herring. Their motives are related to economics and bandwidth—or perhaps multiple, simultaneous access. Their true motives are unrelated to copyright infringement…

It is not illegal to store a torrent with a filename that matches copyright music or films. It may be the user’s own performance, or a commentary, a Blog video, or an authorized concert video. What if the user owns the rights or has secured permission from the copyright owner?

Zoolz is fishing, and then asking the user to prove that they are innocent. The very fact that they can fish demonstrates that their service claim (“zero knowledge”) is a pack of lies. There is no way to justify or defend a backup or cloud service that boasts ‘zero knowledge’, but then snoops into customer data. Fishing, Eavesdropping, Demanding customers defend filename practices, and then Terminating. All of these practices are untenable.

Perhaps this is why Zoolz is discounting their service this week: 1TB of backup (half in cold storage) for $39/lifetime. Consider it a pact with the devil. Service with anti-consumer, middle-finger-in-the-air attitude. Buyer beware!
