What Types of Encryption are Used by Cloud Services?

Encryption is the process of encoding information in such a way that only authorized parties can read it.  It’s what protects the privacy of your files.  Cloud storage services use encryption to prevent hackers and other unauthorized people from accessing customer data.

Types of Encryption Discussed on This Site

Encrypted Storage: Files are encrypted at rest on the cloud storage service.

Encrypted Transfer: Files are encrypted during transfer to and from the cloud storage service.  This helps with privacy when using public Wi-Fi and other insecure networks, such as hotel rooms.

Personal Encryption: For advanced users only.  You control the encryption key.  The online backup service does not have access to it.  If you lose the encryption key, you lose access to your data.  There is no password reset!

Convergent encryption is discussed in a separate article.
