SyncBackSE is file backup and synchronization software.  It can backup files, keep directories sync’ed, or mirror them in two locations.  It’s also affordable, at only $35.

The Bottom Line

SyncBackSE is a great, budget-friendly backup and synchronization program.

Backing Up

SyncBackSE uses profiles to accomplish tasks.  Profiles store information about the files and folders you’d like to backup or synchronize.  The process for creating one is easy, and SyncBackSE uses a Profile Setup Wizard to guide you through the steps.

There are three different types of profiles you can create:

  • Backup
  • Synchronize (SmartSync)
  • Mirror

A backup profile is used to backup your data for future recovery.  A synchronization profile is used when you have two directories with changing files and you want them both to have the same files.  And a mirror profile is used when you want one directory to be identical to another directory.

The profile setup screen is very powerful, but easy enough for beginners to use.

SyncBackSE supports both internal and external drives, network paths, and FTP.  It supports these for either the source or destination.

Files can be compressed into a single file or individual files.  Options such as scheduling, encryption, logging, and more are all available to users.

SyncBackSE will also simulate dry runs of your profiles, showing you exactly what will happen before you run it.

Restoring

Like creating a backup profile, SyncBackSE makes restoring your data easy too.

Right click on the desired profile, click Restore, and the profile runs in reverse.

Features

Easy and Expert modes

New users will feel comfortable using the easy mode.  Power users, and those who want to tinker with their backup and sync jobs will appreciate the expert mode.

Fast Backup

SyncBackSE can speed up the backup process by not scanning the destination first.  This assumes the files won’t be changed on the destination, which is usually the case.

Scheduling

You can schedule backups to run on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.  Other options include when a key is pressed, when logging out of Windows, when files are changed, or periodically.

Copy locked/open Files

SyncBackSE has full support for copying files that are in use, such as a spreadsheet or Word document.

Support

2BrightSparks provides free technical support for the lifetime of the software.  I opened a support ticket and was responded to within one business day.  There is also a user manual, online tutorials and guides, and a community forum.
