Bitcasa Drive and Copy.com Alternatives

Door with chain

Both Bitcasa Drive and Copy.com are shutting down in May. These aren’t the first cloud storage services to shut down and leave their users hanging, and they likely won’t be the last. If you’re wondering where you should put your data after they’ve closed, you’ll be happy to know that there are many suitable alternatives to these services.

Bitcasa Drive Alternatives

One of the biggest benefits to Bitcasa was the “infinite” storage plan that was discontinued in 2014. This seems to be a trend, as SOS Online Backup recently discontinued their unlimited plan as well.

These cloud storage services still offer unlimited storage space, however:

Amazon Cloud Drive requires you manually drag and drop files to upload them to their service, which can be a hassle. There’s no automatic upload like there was with Bitcasa’s desktop client.

Jottacloud is a Norweigan cloud storage service. There aren’t many reviews from customers about it, but they do advertise unlimited space just like Bitcasa did. In our review of the service, we noted that speeds are slow outside of Europe.

OpenDrive is another smaller service that offers unlimited space for both backup and file sync across devices. The price is slightly higher than the other two, at $12.95 per month. There are also some negative reviews from customers.

If you don’t need file synchronization and sharing, these backup services give you unlimited space:

You can access your backed up files from mobile apps with all four services, although you won’t be able to sync and share files like you can with Dropbox.

Another unique feature of Bitcasa was their zero-knowledge encryption. This meant that they could not see what users were uploading or storing on their servers. There is a big market for more secure alternatives to Dropbox, and many services have sprung up to meet this demand.

These file sync and share services offer zero-knowledge encryption:

There you have it. 11 choices for a Bitcasa Drive replacement. But which one should you choose? Sync.com seems to have the best features and price of the bunch. At $98 per year for 2 TB, you get twice as much space as Bitcasa offered for the same price.

Copy.com Alternatives

One of the biggest allures of Copy was the 15 GB of free space it offered.

These services will give you even more free space:

Google Drive is another option if you don’t mind “only” 15 GB of free storage. Degoo doesn’t have file sync and sharing like Copy, so it’s not an ideal replacement. hubiC is a French service that gives 25 GB of free space, as well as 5 GB for reach referral.

MEGA seems to have the fastest speeds and best features of the bunch, so it’s my choice here. If you’re looking for more storage space than a free plan can give you, IDrive ($59.95/year for 1 TB) offers more space at a cheaper price than Copy ever was. IDrive also has backup, file sync, and sharing features.
