IDrive Launches App for Synology NAS

Synology NASOnline backup service IDrive has released an app for Synology NAS devices.  Since the app runs on your NAS (which is assumed to always be on) your backups can run uninterrupted without the use of a separate computer.

IDrive is already one of my favorite online backup services due to its ability to backup mobile devices, PC’s, and Mac’s all on the same account.  Adding support for NAS devices is sure to please users who have home media centers, and business users who use Synology devices to store work data.

If you already backup your data to a Synology NAS, the app provides an easy way to store your backups in the cloud.  I always recommend people store their backups in more than one location.

Some of the features of this app include:

  • Backup and restore data on Synology NAS devices
  • Scheduling of backup tasks
  • Email notifications for completed backup tasks
  • Log reporting
  • New UI (screenshots below)
  • Proxy support
  • Bandwidth throttling feature
  • Customize backup location

After installing the app, you’ll login to your IDrive account.  Just like with the desktop software, you can use your own encryption key.

You can select files and folders to backup, set exclusions, and finally schedule your backup.  There’s also a restore tab to recover data to your NAS.

For installation instructions and more screenshots, see IDrive’s page on the Synology app.
